Due to the poor state of conservation, it was felt that the restoration of the building was an urgent matter, given the imminent danger of collapse of the façade. In addition to restoring the necessary safety and health conditions, the set of interventions sought to preserve the history and authenticity of the building by enhancing its architectural character and housing typology, albeit adapted to current conditions.

Main facade

In this context, the main façades were preserved, the staircase core was stabilized and all the interior compartmentalization was reorganized, defining the separation between social and private spaces in a clearer and more linear way.

For the new apartments, the pre-existing philosophy was reversed, in which the social spaces were placed near the entrance area of the houses and facing the most dynamic “urban fronts” – Morais Soares and Francisco Sanches streets.
