With its working class roots, the Bairro de Santos Nicolau has a consolidated urban structure, with defined infrastructural axes, and a recent street layout on the southern boundary established by Avenida Belo Horizonte. With the new urban design on the slopes of the Port of Setúbal, a series of uncharacteristic and scattered buildings, of a spontaneous nature, have become evident, which form a framework of territorial disorder, requiring a reorganization intervention that focuses on the land and its surroundings.

Taking into account preliminary urban studies, this subdivision proposal aims for a coherent and viable articulation with the pre-existing fabric, as a way of integrating the fragmented areas into the urban logic of the city. Through the construction of a series of residential buildings and commercial dynamics, the aim is to establish a new centrality in the neighborhood with meeting points and regular activities – pedestrian and cycling routes, seating and recreational areas, etc. – that promote constant interaction between inhabitants, the public space and the surrounding area.

From this location, the urban relationship with the Sado Estuary is unquestionable, which is why this system of views – over the river, the coastline of Tróia and the silhouette of the Serra da Arrábida – is valued in the schematic plan and elevation composition of the various buildings.
